Awakening Our Awareness of Whiteness
Saturday, August 27, 2016
9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Location: Fairfield Lane Library
1485 Corydale Dr. Fairfield, OH 45014
As our nation struggles with the reality of 21st century racism, many white people want to understand it, and work to eradicate it. Words like "white privilege" and "colorblind" are often used with little understanding of their meaning or impact. This workshop is an introduction to the role of whiteness in maintaining racism, and the work white people need to do to dismantle it. Without blame or shame, the workshop asks white people to wake up to the reality of "unearned skin-color privilege" and become anti-racist allies. The workshop incorporates powerful video clips and brief presentations, combined with reflection and small group discussions to: examine the history of whiteness; consider how we learn to be "white;" and take a hard look at white privilege and "colorblindness."
